Immanuel – “God with us”: The in-dwelling of the Holy Spirit

Matthew 16:15

Matthew 16:15 verse “Who do you say that I am?

My first memorable experience with the Holy Spirit happened when I was probably around 11 or 12.  In rural New York State, I walked 20 minutes to my bus stop and waited anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes more for my school bus to arrive.  The excruciating 20 minutes extra was usually because of an ice or snow storm.  In NY, snowplows continually use salt to keep the roads clear and it’s illegal for cars to have bald tires.  Bad weather is not an excuse for not showing up.  I don’t remember school being closed for “snow days”.  So I waited.  My fingers and toes would tingle with pain from the cold and I had to pace and sometimes dance to 80’s music to keep from going numb.  Before any yogi told me about visualization, I was doing it as a pre-teen in 1981.  I imagined a light in my chest, and it was like the sun, warming me from the inside.  Knowing myself at that time, I could not attribute that visualization to me.

“Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16.  “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?” 1 Corinthians 6:19.  “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”  Romans 8:11

Who is Jesus?  He cannot be ignored.  Christmas can be tolerated but not ignored, and thinking it’s a vestige of pagan ritual is being mis-informed.  Grace is the greatest mystery – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  A mystery only God knows and science, religion, nor culture can explain.  Only through your own choice can you encounter this mystery.

Isaiah 7:14 prophesies “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”, which means “God with us”.  In Romans 8:9, Paul writes, “you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.”  And that is a choice, free will.

In 1 John 2:27, John writes “As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.”   The creator of all that is seen and unseen wants to have a personal relationship with you through his Holy Spirit.  His light is good and brings peace.
